Scream Ending Was Only One Filmed Despite Multiple Written Versions

Exclusive: Scream 2022 writer, James Vanderbilt, reveals that despite having written numerous endings for the movie, only one was filmed.

The ending of the latest installment in the Scream franchise was the only one filmed, despite the fact that numerous endings were written. After over a decade of waiting, Scream fans have finally been treated to a new film in a franchise that first kicked off back in 1996. The original Scream was directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson, and in the years that followed, the duo worked together on three sequels, with Craven directing all four.

In addition to its unique approach of being a horror film that actively mocks horror films, the Scream franchise quickly became known for its intricately woven plots, all of which worked to hide the identities of the ever-evolving Ghostface killer. Though some entries have made the job of guessing the killers slightly easier than others, fans can’t get enough of trying to figure out who’s doing the killing and why. The precedent for having two killers was set with the first film – an expertly crafted twist that left audiences both surprised and delighted to have been so outright hoodwinked by the film’s final reveal. As production on Scream 2022 got underway, this desire to keep things as surprising as possible was strictly adhered to, with multiple versions of the film’s ending reportedly written to prevent leaks and spoilers.

While speaking recently with Scream 2022 writer, James Vanderbilt, Screen Rant was able to obtain exclusive information regarding how those extra endings were handled in terms of filming. As it turns out, despite having multiple endings to thwart would-be spoilers from ruining the film for fans before it ever arrived in theaters, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett made the somewhat economical decision to only shoot one ending. As Vanderbilt explained, this decision was also partly due to the film’s production taking place during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Read what Vanderbilt said below:

Then when it came to production, we were shooting in COVID so, we didn’t really have a lot of extra time, not that you ever do on a movie. But the ending we shot is the only ending we shot.

While it’s great to know that writing several different endings was likely an effective way of keeping the script (and spoilers) from circulating online, many fans will undoubtedly be a little disappointed that the extra endings were never shot. Had they been shot, the possibility of adding them to a Blu-ray release would have been a lot of fun. Nonetheless, reviews for the new film have been very promising, with a great job done of keeping audiences guessing until the end. The passing of Craven made the future of the franchise uncertain, but with the arrival of Scream 2022, it appears there’s plenty more opportunities to not only keep the series going, but to also ensure that it lives up to Craven’s legacy.

It’s also interesting to consider whether or not some of those extra endings could be tweaked for use in the next Scream sequel, should it become a reality. The idea of continuing on with the franchise has already been discussed by Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett, though exactly how plausible the idea of more films is will most likely depend on how well this latest installment performs. With positive reviews from fans and critics, however, it does seem that audiences will be guessing about the identity of future killers in the series for some time to come.
