A24 is an independent film studio that has revolutionized the independent film industry while producing some of the best films on the market. The company works in film and television production, as well as film distribution. A24, as a whole, takes risks continually to produce distinctive films that focus on important themes and characters. They give audiences stories that are surreal, honest, and thought-provoking. A studio like A24 is rare, and they are not afraid to push the boundaries of cinema while introducing us to original and authentic stories. Since their humble beginnings, A24 has become a major contender in the industry that has produced award-winning films.
A24 was founded by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel, and John Hodges in 2012. Their career took off with the release of Harmony Korine’s Springbreakers, an artistic and surreal look at modern youth. Since then, they have produced several films and TV series that have been adored by critics and audiences alike. A24 has proved that independent filmmaking can make an impact on our culture and introduce us to new themes and thought-provoking stories. The studio has spanned across all genres including drama, comedy, and horror. They focus on their characters and have created several stories that bring us to a new dimension of cinema. Let’s take a look at some of A24’s best films to date.
7 Ex Machina
Ex Machina is a mind-bending science fiction story that showcases the evolution of artificial intelligence. Oscar Issac plays Nathan Bateman, the CEO of a successful search engine company, who enlists the help of programmer Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson) to carry out the Turing test for an A.I. named Ava (Alicia Vikander). The movie is quite suspenseful as tensions grow, and we watch as Caleb tries to figure out who to trust. The movie is a fascinating look into A.I. and what we can expect to come as technology evolves in the real world. Ex Machina explores what it means to be self-aware as a human and as a robot, and Vikander gives a convincing performance as the artificial Ava.
6 The Florida Project
A24 and Sean Baker go hand in hand and their collaboration has produced some very thought-provoking films different from anything else on the market. The Florida Project explores the life of 6 year-old Moonie (Brooklynn Prince) and her friends as they spend their summer days living in motels on the outskirts of Disney World. What this film does, like many other A24 projects, is give us a look into real, gritty characters that we don’t normally see on screen. We watch as Moonie and her mom (Bria Vinaite) hustle each day to make rent, and the film features some of the best young actor performances ever. Willem Dafoe earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of the motel manager Bobby.
5 Lady Bird
A24 has introduced us to several new filmmakers including the talented Greta Gerwig, who wrote and directed one of the greatest coming of age stories of our generation. The film follows the story of high school student Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan) as she navigates love, friendship, and personal identity. One of the most endearing parts of the film is the honest and loving relationship between Lady Bird and her mother (Laurie Metcalf). Lady Bird is a perfect blend of comedy and drama and features several fine performances.
4 Green Room
A24 producers are masters at creating gritty, violent thrillers. Green Room follows the aftermath of a punk rock band witnessing a murder at a venue filled with white supremacists. They are held captive by a group of skinhead psychopaths, led by the sinister Darcy (Patrick Stewart). The film creates tension and suspense as we watch the band plotting their escape. The dialogue is sharp, and the performances are fantastic as they portray the dreadful situation that they were roped into. Although it is a violent film, with some scenes that are hard to watch, this is a must-see for anybody who loves thrillers.
A24 has produced several great horror films, but Ari Aster’s Hereditary is by far their scariest work to date. The combination of Ari Aster and A24 is a perfect fit, and we can’t wait to see what they make next. Hereditary is a horrifying film about a family dealing with grief after the unexpected death of the youngest child Charlie (Millie Shapiro). As the matriarch, Annie (Toni Collette), attempts to make contact with Charlie in the afterlife, a sinister force begins to disrupt the lives of the family. The movie is terrifying from start to finish and features one of Collette’s greatest performances to date.
2 Good Time
A24 is a studio that is not afraid to take risks and create meaningful, thought-provoking stories. The Safdie brothers’ Good Time is a thrilling story about Connie Nikas (Robert Pattinson) attempting to get his brother out of jail after a botched bank robbery. The film is filled with vibrant images, original camera techniques, and a dynamite score that brings it all together. The film has a lot of heart, in terms of the relationship between the Nikas brothers, and the film basically reinvented the career of Pattinson. You never expect what is going to happen next in this film, and it should be seen by all.
Barry Jenkin’s Oscar-winning film was a groundbreaking piece of art. The film tells the story of Chiron in three different points of his life while he struggles with his sexuality and finding his place in a cruel world. At the same time, his mother (Naomie Harris) is a drug addict, and the only affection that he gains as a child his from her drug dealer, played brilliantly by Mahershala Ali. Moonlight is heartbreaking, but is an authentic story about love and the struggles of life. A24 has proved that they can create Oscar-worthy films bound together with highly original stories.
The new show, Justified: City Primeval is based on the book ’City Primeval; High Noon in Detroit.’
