Far Cry’s Beautiful Wildlife Deserves Better Than Existing For Murder

The Far Cry series has some of the most beautifully designed and animated animals in all of gaming, and they should be put to better use.

The Far Cry series features some of the most beautiful depictions of wildlife in all of gaming, and sadly, these animals’ only role is usually to die at the player’s hands. The wonderfully crafted models of the animals as they wander along the series’ signature gorgeous landscapes is truly an impressive sight to behold, which makes their frequent deaths feel all the more tragic.

Despite the significant effort that was put into bringing the animals of Far Cry to life, in-game they exist for little purpose other than to be pretty decorations at best, or the targets of violence at worst (outside of the few animal companions). Hunting has long been a part of the series, with Far Cry 6 features plenty of fishing spots as well, and these things make sense as a mechanic considering the survival and crafting mechanics that are core to the gameplay. However, since the animals are such a beautiful part of the game, it’s sad that there’s little else to do with them, and that other crafting elements haven’t been more emphasized. It’s still possible to reverse this trend.

It’s still possible for the series to reverse this trend. Far Cry games have previously made it possible to interact with animals more positively, be it by petting dogs or taming wild animals with bait, and this could be expanded into more of a feature in future entries. By befriending wild animals, additional perks could be provided to the player. Animals such as boars or wolves could help the player fight enemies, or help patrol geographical areas. Far Cry 6’s Amigos are a good start at a better human and animal relationship, and other rewards could be added for befriending a larger subsection of wild animals, such as adding outfits and other cosmetic rewards with wildlife themes.

Far Cry’s Beautiful Animals Deserve Much More Respect

Far Cry has some amazing animals, and it's a shame that they do so little with them.

Far Cry could also incorporate more ways to weave the wildlife of the game world into the gameplay. For example, a future game could have a side activity where the protagonist tasked with photographing animals for an ally who wants to catalogue the land’s wildlife, rewarding them with gifts for doing so. Likewise, there could be missions that specifically bring the player through parts of the game world that give them an excellent view of the wildlife within. Far Cry’s campaign stories like New Dawn have come under criticism, but they could still come up with solid reasons to let the player sightsee between moments of action and gunplay. For example, sneaking through a rainforest teeming with birds flying through the trees would give players a chance to pull out a camera for a photo moment regardless of their main goal. Ubisoft took the time to make the world beautiful, so it could also do more to make sure that the player gets to appreciate it.

This is not to say that Far Cry has to get rid of its hunting mechanics entirely. The series has its roots in the survival genre, and likely doesn’t want to lose sight of that. Survival games and hunting are naturally linked, and that becomes difficult to escape. Hunting for food and supplies will undoubtedly remain a part of the Far Cry series, especially since some fear Far Cry 6’s emphasis on crafting over hunting is causing the series to lose its roots. The problem isn’t that hunting exists in the game, but rather that the exquisitely designed animals serve no other purpose beyond becoming crafting materials.

Far Cry is a series that creates some of the loveliest virtual wildlife that one can see in gaming, and there should be more care put into making sure that players can take the time to appreciate it. Giving players more options to interact with the game’s animals beyond simply killing them could add new layers to the experience. With a few changes in this direction, the next Far Cry could be even more of an enrapturing journey.
