Every Upcoming Pokémon Game Confirmed In Development

There are a number of Pokémon games in development, such as Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl and Pokémon Legends: Arceus for the Switch.

There are a number of upcoming Pokémon games that are confirmed to be in development, with some set to launch later this year. The Nintendo Switch has already received several high-profile Pokémon games, such as Let’s Go! Pikachu & Eevee, Pokémon Sword & Shield (and its expansions), and New Pokémon Snap, to say nothing of the series’ growing popularity on mobile platforms.

Pokémon is one of the biggest media franchises on the planet, and only a portion of its revenue comes from its games. The new Pokémon games are the cornerstone of every other aspect of the franchise, as they introduce the new Pokémon that ultimately end up being featured elsewhere. They also recycle the old ones into the new material, which happens when the remakes of the older games are released. As such, there will always be a slate of new Pokémon games on the way, especially as the franchise, and the Nintendo Switch, continue to grow in popularity.

There is currently no word regarding the next Pokémon games (the ninth generation mainline titles) are coming out, and they likely won’t be released until the end of 2022 at the earliest, but The Pokémon Company still has plenty of high-profile titles launching over the next six months that should keep fans happy. There are also a few Pokémon games that have vanished from the public eye, but these are considered to be in development until The Pokémon Company declares that they’re canceled.

Pokémon Unite (Android/iOS Version)

The new MOBA game Pokémon Unite is currently available on Nintendo Switch, but it will be reaching a much wider audience later this year, as it will be hitting Android and iOS devices in September, offering a twist on more traditional MOBA gameplay – with an adorable Pokémon facelift to boot.

Detective Pikachu Sequel

Detective Pikachu video game

The original Detective Pikachu game was released for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan in 2016, with an international release following in 2018. The Detective Pikachu movie inspired new interest in the concept, and a Detective Pikachu sequel Nintendo Switch was announced for the Nintendo Switch in 2019. The Pokémon Company hasn’t mentioned the game since then, but it’s assumed to still be in development until its cancelation has been confirmed. There is currently no word regarding a possible release date.

Pokémon Sleep

Pokémon Sleep was announced during the same press conference as the Detective Pikachu sequel, and it also has seemingly vanished into thin air. The game tracks how the player sleeps with the aid of the Pokémon GO Plus+ accessory. Many fans have assumed that Pokémon Sleep has been canceled, and has ended up sharing the fate of the Wii Vitality Sensor, but it’s considered to still be in development until the Pokémon Company confirms that the project has been shut down.

It seems that Pokémon Sleep will soon be waking up. A Pokémon Go datamine revealed that Pokémon Sleep content has been added to the game. There is now information related to the Pokémon Go Plus+ accessory present in the game’s files. It’s possible that The Pokémon Company will announce a release date for the game during the next Pokémon Day celebration events, which will take place on February 27, 2022.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

The big mainline Pokémon video games of 2021 are Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, which are Nintendo Switch remakes of the Sinnoh games. Very little footage from the games has been revealed so far, but they appear to be straight remakes of Pokémon Diamond & Pearl. It’s unclear if they will contain any content or concepts from Pokémon Sword & Shield, such as Dynamaxing or a Wild Area. It’s also unclear if they will contain content from Pokémon Platinum. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl will release for the Nintendo Switch on November 19, 2021.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Pokemon: Legends Arceus Release Date

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is an upcoming open-world game that is set in the distant past of the Sinnoh region. The game involves the hunt for Arceus, during an era when Sinnoh has yet to be colonized by humans. Pokémon Legends: Arceus is set to be one of the biggest Switch games of 2022, thanks to it switching up the established formula of the Pokémon series, and going for something that is closer to the Monster Hunter franchise, or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, with its open-world design and exploration. Pokémon Legends: Arceus is set to release for the Nintendo Switch on January 28, 2022.
