Percy Jackson Author Confirms One Trailer Moment Has Deeper Meaning

Percy Jackson author Rick Riordan responds to fan questions about a key moment in the show’s trailer and confirms an intentional, subtle detail.

Percy Jackson author Rick Riordan confirms there is one trailer moment that isn’t quite what it appears to be at first glance. First announced to be in development back in 2020, Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians is the long-awaited television adaptation of Riordan’s beloved YA book series. The Adam Project‘s Walker Scobell leads the cast as the titular Percy, a witty 12-year-old whose life is turned upside down when he learns he’s the demigod son of the Greek god Poseidon. Production is currently underway on Percy Jackson season 1, with a tentative 2024 release date planned.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

During last weekend’s D23 Expo, Riordan appeared onstage alongside Scobell and his fellow stars Leah Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri to tease the forthcoming series. Their presentation featured the reveal of the first Percy Jackson trailer. The short clip previewed Percy’s introduction to Camp Half-Blood, and one aspect of his walk to the Poseidon cabin caught some viewers’ attention. The symbol over the cabin door isn’t Greek, nor does it seem to explicitly match the trident that is typically associated with Poseidon. There are similar odd symbols on the other cabins glimpsed within the Percy Jackson trailer.

In his latest blog post, Riordan has offered an explanation for this odd visual marker. After recapping his D23 experience and turning his attention to fan questions, Riordan writes, “What is with the unusual symbols on the cabins?” He then confirms what some might’ve already guessed and teases there is more to this strange symbol than what meets the eye. Riordan says:

There is a story behind these. You are right. They are not Greek. They are not any known human language. That is intentional. You will discover what those are about later on. Good spotting, eagle-eyed fans!

At first glance, Percy Jackson‘s surprising symbol just looked like a new creative choice. It isn’t exactly a trident, but it still holds the basic shape of one. However, Riordan’s outright confirmation there was a specific intention behind these new symbols suggests there is a unique twist at play. It could be as simple as Percy Jackson‘s Greek gods expressing themselves in a specific way, or it could have bigger implications. If there is a different language at play within the Percy Jackson series, perhaps Percy and his friends will find themselves grappling with it as they embark on their first adventure.

Since this pertains to something as innocuous as godly cabin symbols, it seems likely that the full answer behind Percy Jackson‘s new icons won’t come until the show itself premieres. With just a handful of behind the scenes images and a short teaser to work with, there is still so much that is unknown about this series. Riordan has confirmed Percy Jackson will be more faithful to the books than the movies were, but he has also alluded to some new twists and character changes. Camp Half-Blood’s new design seems to fall into that category, and while the decision might cause some consternation, at least Riordan is completely on board with the direction Percy Jackson is going in.
