The Adam Project Will Hit Netflix in March, New Images Revealed

A whole host of new images and a release date for Netflix’s upcoming time-travel adventure, The Adam Project, have now been released. Starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by Shawn Levy, The Adam Project will beam onto the streaming platform on March 11, with the handful of images giving us our best look yet at the sci-fi family drama to come.

Released by Vanity Fair and shared by Netflix Film, these latest images from The Adam Project show-off Ryan Reynolds as the titular Adam alongside an all-star supporting cast, which includes Jennifer Garner as Adam’s mother and Mark Ruffalo as Adam’s father, as well as Zoe Saldana, Catherine Keener and Alex Mallari Jr. Newcomer Walker Scobell will also star as the young version of Reynolds.

More details surrounding the plot of The Adam Project have also been revealed. The Adam Project will be led by Ryan Reynolds as Adam Reed, “a wounded time traveler who ventures into the past from 2050 on a rogue mission to search for the woman he loves (played by Zoe Saldana) who had previously gotten lost in the time-space continuum under mysterious circumstances. However, when Adam’s ship is damaged, he ends up sent spiraling back to 2022 and the only place he knows from that time, his home. It’s there that a 12-year-old version of Adam (played by Scobell) becomes his ally.”

The Adam Project Echoes Aspects of Ryan Reynolds’ Own Life

Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy have collaborated before, with the pair bringing the video game venture Free Guy to life last year. The Adam Project though is a very different cinematic beast, with certain elements echoing aspects of Ryan Reynolds’ real-life as the actor plays a slightly different character to what audiences are used to seeing. “The humor that Adam uses in the movie echoes certain aspects of my own life, which is that it’s a defense mechanism,” Reynolds explained to Vanity Fair. “It’s a defense mechanism from allowing anything in and trying to deflect. And of course, part of the journey that he’s on is to lower that shield.”

Shawn Levy continued, revealing that the characters of Adam and Guy could not be more different. “This character is night-and-day different from the character Ryan played for me in our last movie,” the filmmaker said. “Blue Shirt Guy is a deeply innocent, naive boy in a man’s body. Whereas Adam Reed in The Adam Project is bruised by life and consequently deeply cynical.”

Though many will tune in for the time travel, the story is really centered on a family drama, with the older Adam forced to confront his father. Dying during Adam’s childhood, the movie will see the time traveler facing his father after so many years of crafting an image of him in his head. Again, something which Ryan Reynolds can relate to. “I have this thought about life, which is that we tell ourselves stories,” Reynolds said. “So you have this central character who has told himself a story about his own father that isn’t necessarily true. I know that I’ve done that in my life. I’ve told myself stories to justify things about my father and my complicated relationship I had with him before he passed. Reconciling that is really difficult.”

The Adam Project will premiere on Netflix on March 11, 2022.
