Percy Jackson Author Rick Riordan Shares New Details About Disney+ Series

For several years fans of the popular children’s book series Percy Jackson & the Olympians have been chomping at the bit for a second chance at an adaption. On January 25th, series author Rick Riordan released a video announcement that a series was happening. On January 29th on his official blog, he’s given some follow-up on his blog on the status of the upcoming series. The video announcement can be viewed below.

“This is great news, obviously, and we couldn’t have done it without the enthusiasm and support of millions of Percy fans making themselves heard. Thank you for that! Becky and I will be involved at every step of the process, making sure this is a show we think you’ll be proud of.”

On his website, Riordan expressed many words of encouragement behind the team for the upcoming pilot. The pilot will be directed by James Bobin (2011’s The Muppets, 2014’s The Muppets Most Wanted) whose kids are big fans of the books. Riordan himself is also involved in the script writing, as he states in his personal blog.

“Our writers’ room continues to meet every week, and I am always in every meeting. The team continues to be absolutely wonderful. We have delivered the first four scripts (which is what we needed for the green light) and are now working on some revisions based on the studio’s feedback… A large part of this spring will be spent finishing up the season one scripts. I can tell you with 100% confidence that this season follows The Lightning Thief faithfully, although we’re adding a lot of interesting nuances, depth, Easter eggs and backstory that will keep the story fresh and fun even if you know the books inside and out. Everyone in the writers’ room is a fan of the books — thank the gods! — and the best part of our job is when we think of things that make the other writers squeal with excitement, because as book fans, it is something they want to see on screen. You have a lot of advocates in the room, demigods, including me.”

Riordan also talked in great detail about the news on casting the main heroes. Currently, there is no news on who will be playing the main trio of friends. But Riordan has confirmed that the team will be very careful on who will fill the shoes.

“As previously announced, we have launched into the audition process for the three main roles: Percy, Annabeth and Grover. The perfect trio has to be found first, as that will inform a lot of the other casting choices. It’s not just a matter of finding a great actor for each role. It’s a matter of finding a group of great actors that have good chemistry when they act together. That process is on-going, but we are making good progress. Don’t expect any announcements on that front for a while. I would guess it’ll be several more months, but that’s just my own estimate.”

Percy Gets His Wings Again

Percy Jackson

Percy Jackson & the Olympians started in 2005 with the first book, The Lightning Thief. The story follows the titular Percy as he discovers that he is the son of the Greek god Poseidon. He and his mother are brought to Camp Half-Blood, a hiding place for fellow demigods. Percy’s best friend, Grover Underwood, reveals that he is actually a satyr in disguise. At the camp Percy meets Annabeth Chase, who is the daughter of Athena. When news comes out that Zeus’s lightning bolts are missing, suspicions rise amongst the pantheon. Percy, Grover and Annabeth set out of find the missing lightning bolts and bring peace. The books were adapted into two films, 2010’s The Lightning Thief and 2013’s The Sea of Monsters. Both were successful at the box office but were met with lukewarm reception from fans and critics alike.

It seems as if fans will finally be getting the Percy Jackson they’ve been hoping for with this new series from Disney+. And it’s a refreshing addition to see author Rick Riordan not also just excited, but a part of the production as well. According to Riordan’s blog, the plan is to being filming in Vancouver this summer.

“This is a massive project. It is one of the biggest shows the teams at Disney have ever produced — and that is down to you all, the Percy fans! They know you are important, and they want to do right by you! I will keep you posted when I know more.”
