Benedict Cumberbatch defends Doctor Strange’s catastrophic mistake that exposed Earth to interdimensional threats in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Doctor Strange’s catastrophic mistake in Spider-Man: No Way Home was recently defended by Benedict Cumberbatch himself. The MCU’s main sorcerer joined Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) latest adventure in No Way Home. Unfortunately, he also had something to do with the wall-crawler having to deal with interdimensional villains.
With Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) no longer around to provide help, the young hero asked Doctor Strange for help after his secret identity as Spider-Man was revealed by Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Since they worked closely together in Avengers: Infinity War, the sorcerer was the only other active hero in the MCU who Spider-Man could rely on. And with his situation already negatively affecting his loved ones, Peter had no choice but to reach out to an ally. Luckily for him, Doctor Strange was eager to help him undo Quentin Beck’s malicious revelation. The plan was to cast a spell that would make everyone forget about Peter’s ties to Spider-Man, but it backfired after the tampered spell accidentally exposed Earth to multiversal threats.
Speaking out about his character’s mistake in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Cumberbatch defended Doctor Strange’s decision to meddle with Peter’s business. The actor sat down with Penelope Cruz for Variety‘s Actors on Actors segment and said that the wizard was motivated by his love for his fellow hero who was clearly in distress. Having grown to care about him, Doctor Strange decided to take a risk in an effort to help him. Read what Cumberbatch said below:
To have those three films culminate in that moment was extraordinary to be a part of. And to let my character make some hefty mistakes out of love — really, out of generosity towards someone he realizes he really cares for.
Before Doctor Strange cast the original spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Wong (Benedict Wong) had already warned him about potential repercussions regarding his move. But, he still went ahead with it. He seemed to be confident with what he was going to do, but the problem started when Peter changed his mind multiple times, resulting in the incantation being tampered. Arguably, both should be equally accountable for what happened: Doctor Strange for risking the potential catastrophe by casting the spell and Peter for being indecisive. However, being the older between the pair, Doctor Strange has received the most of the blame.
After Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange will have a bigger mission to tackle in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. And given the sorcerer’s effort to help him in his own dilemma, it’s curious if Spider-Man will show up and help his fellow MCU hero. Considering the fact that the events of the threequel directly lead to Doctor Strange’s next mission, it’s almost mandatory for the wall-crawler to show up and help the wizard in his time of need. Because while Doctor Strange doesn’t currently remember Peter Parker, the young hero is well aware that he risked everything just to help him.
