How Ozark Season 4 Part 2 Will End

It feels like a matter of when (not if) the Byrdes will implode – here’s how it could happen in the final seven episodes of Ozark season 4.

It feels like a matter of when, not if, the Byrdes will implode and now that the pieces have been moved into place, it seems clear how it will happen in Ozark season 4 part 2. Netflix split the final season of their acclaimed crime drama into two parts, releasing the first seven episodes in January 2022, with seven more to come later in the year. When Ozark season 4 part 2 will premiere remains unclear, but it’s safe to say audiences will find out the Byrdes’ ultimate fate sooner rather than later.

When Ozark season 4 begins, the Byrdes are given a seemingly impossible task by Omar Navarro. He wants them to negotiate a deal with the FBI that will buy him his freedom. As is Ozark‘s way, not everything goes according to plan, with the deal for Omar being upended by overzealous FBI agent Maya Miller. Still, the Byrdes end the season in a hopeful place after they’ve wormed their way out of another predicament that seemed to have insurmountable obstacles. That hope will quickly be dashed in part 2 if Ozark season 4 part 1’s opening scene is any indication.

The Byrdes are shown planning to leave the Ozarks, with Jonah and Charlotte packed and ready to return to Chicago. Before they can celebrate too much, though, the family gets in a terrifying car accident that is sure to upend their lives. This – and a few other loose threads – will all factor into how things play out in the final seven episodes of Ozark. The car crash seems to be a red herring of sorts, a symbolic way to show that, no matter what they do, bad things will always happen to the Byrdes. How they could truly fall from grace is hinted at by several characters over the first seven episodes, though. Here’s how Ozark season 4 part 2 will likely end.

Mel Sattem Could Be The Byrde’s Downfall

ozark season 4 end theory

The pesky private investigator Mel Sattem (one of Ozark season 4’s newest characters) could ultimately prove to be the downfall of the Byrdes. Mel Sattem was initially looking for Helen Pierce, the former cartel lawyer murdered at the end of season 3, but he stumbled onto something much larger than he thought when he began investigating the Byrdes. Throughout part 1 of season 4, Mel Sattem begins realizing that Marty and Wendy may have something to do with the Navarro Cartel and his tenacity, as well as his background as a former police officer who was very good at his job, makes him the prime candidate to uncover the connections between the Byrdes and Helen’s death (as well as their overall dealings).

When Agent Maya Miller arrested Omar Navarro at the end of Ozark season 4 part 1, Mel clearly began connecting the dots. There’s more to it than a desire to bring people to justice, though. Mel lost his job as a police officer because he was caught using drugs from the evidence room where he worked. His addictive personality clearly translates to his cases – Mel showed up at the Byrdes house numerous times throughout the season even while they consistently stonewalled him. His persistence likely won’t end now, as he not only has yet to find out what happened to Helen, but he has another lead on an even bigger case that could bring him respectability and the personal satisfaction of exposing a major crime.

Will Agent Maya Miller & Mel Sattem Work Together?

The foundation for collaboration between Mel Sattem and Agent Miller was laid throughout Ozark season 4 part 1. They first met at the Byrdes house early on in the season and while their relationship was combative merely because of the circumstances, they could come around to each other. Maya demonstrated her willingness to flout orders when she arrested Omar Navarro. Her desire for justice overrode her superior’s. It’s plausible to assume that, if approached by Mel Sattem and given the opportunity to expose the cartel and the Byrdes along with it, she would definitely consider the proposition.

Additionally, Maya’s efforts to arrest Omar Navarro resulted in essentially the same outcome, except this time, someone even more ruthless is at the head of the cartel. The Byrdes are able to negotiate a deal where Omar is released from prison and sent back to Mexico while no longer the leader of the Navarro Cartel. Instead, his hot-headed nephew Javi takes control of the cartel and begins a working relationship with the FBI. This will only anger Maya further and her desire for true justice may override any loyalty she feels towards her job.

What Could Happen To Ruth In Ozark Season 4 Part 2

ozark season 4 part 2 ending

Ruth’s fate is left up in the air at the end of Ozark season 4 part 1, but Jonah Byrde could ultimately be responsible for her demise. Jonah’s anger at his mother in the aftermath of his uncle Ben’s death leads him to work with Ruth and Wyatt Langmore in the Snell heroin operation. The Navarro Cartel threatened to do something about their competitors in the Ozarks if the Byrdes didn’t get them to stop first. Unfortunately, Javi followed through on his promise. Many thought Ruth would kill Darlene Snell, but it was Javi who pulled the trigger and murdered Ruth and Wyatt. With one of her only remaining family members dead, Ruth is on a warpath and Jonah sends her straight to Javi towards a confrontation that would almost certainly end in her death.

It seems like Jula Garner’s fan-favorite character is destined to meet her end in Ozark season 4 part 2 and it may happen early on. Ruth is one of the only people that Marty cares about outside of his immediate family – the pair’s relationship has grown over the last three seasons and the Byrdes considered Ruth family at one point. Despite the fact that they are on opposite sides in Ozark season 4, part 1, Marty still clearly cares for her. Javi killing Ruth could make it clear to the Byrdes that they are not safe and Jonah inadvertently being the cause of it proves the underlying theme that the Byrdes are the real villains of Ozark.

What About Ozark Season 4’s Opening Scene?

Ozark season 4 opening scene missed opportunity

The opening scene of Ozark season 4 seemingly has nothing to do with the rest of the seven episodes released. Showrunner Chris Mundy has said that he wanted to wait to revisit it for a few reasons, one of them being the idea that something bad can happen to anyone at any time. Ultimately, the car crash at the beginning of Ozark season 4 part 1 could be a red herring. It feels like a superficial way to put the Byrdes in danger without delivering any consequences that are integral to the plot overall. While the car crash will surely factor into the end of Ozark season 4 part 2, it won’t be the thing that brings the Byrdes down. It will, however, put them in a weaker position where it is harder to fight back against the slew of enemies that are coming their way.
