Apple TV+ is developing a television adaptation of Pedro Almodóvar’s film, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. We now know that Gina Rodriguez is set to star and executive produce this series. It has not begun to film yet but we do know that it will aim to keep the same feel of the movie while adding modern elements to it.

Per Deadline, it was announced that Rodriguez will join the series in front and behind the camera. She is best known for her role as Jane Villanueva on the CW’s romantic dramedy series Jane the Virgin. That role won her a Golden Globe Award in 2015.

The series will be based on the 1988 comedy starring Carmen Maura and Antonio Banderas, which brought Almodóvar acclaim when the film was featured at the 45th International Venice Film Festival. There it received a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination. The series adaptation will be Almodóvar’s first dive into scripted television after a very long career as a writer-director, earning seven Oscar nominations and wins for best foreign film for All About My Mother, and best original screenplay for Talk to Her. The news of this comes as Almodóvar is in the process of developing his first English-language feature, A Manual for Cleaning Women, which Cate Blanchett is attached to star in.

The story follows a character named Pepe who, alongside several other characters, tries to balance life, love and many other complications in Spain in 1987. Rodriguez is going to play Pepe in this streaming series adaptation. The Apple TV+ will feature in both English and Spanish. This new adaptation will allow the unique comedy to come back and into a brand-new era of viewers. The series will also give more time to dive into the story while still holding true to the original film.

Almodovar will also executive produce for El Deseo, along with Rodriguez and Molly Breeskin for Rodriguez’s I Can and I Will Productions. 3Pas Studios’ Eugenio Derbez and Ben Odell will also executive produce, Sonia Gambaro will co-produce. The series is produced by Lionsgate TV.

The 1988 film, starring Maura and Antonio Banderas, brought Almodóvar widespread international attention following its debut at the 45th International Venice Film Festival. It won five Goya Awards including Best Film and Best Actress in a Leading Role for Maura. Currently, we do not have any other information regarding the rest of the cast or a potential release date on Apple TV+. However, with the streaming service working very hard on new content, we could see this sooner rather than later. As always we will stay on top of this and any new development you can be assured that we will be the first to let know. Have you seen the original film? Will the new series be able to bring the same magic while adding something new to the show?
