Captain Marvel has decades of missing adventures never seen and What If…? proved an animated series would be the ideal way to show Carol’s history.
Marvel Studios’ next animated show on Disney+ should be about Captain Marvel and showing Carol Danvers’ adventures across the universe before Avengers: Endgame. Brie Larson will return as Captain Marvel in The Marvels, which is scheduled to be released in February 2023. Larson will be joined by Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan after she headlines her Ms. Marvel series on Disney+, and Teyonah Parris returning as Monica Rambeau. However, Captain Marvel was also a major player in What If…? where the cosmic Avenger was voiced by Alexandra Daniels.
Captain Marvel was a Marvel Cinematic Universe prequel set in 1995. Carol Danvers was kidnapped by the Kree in 1989 after exposure to the Tesseract/Space Infinity Stone (which was called the Lightspeed Engine in the film) gifted the Air Force pilot with incredible powers. Renamed “Vers” by the Kree, Danvers returned to Earth to stop a Skrull invasion only to learn the Kree were the villains who were holding back her true power all along. With help from Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and her best friend, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), Carol stopped a Kree attack on Earth led by Ronan (Lee Pace). Danvers then left Earth to find the Skrulls a new homeworld and she didn’t return until after Nick Fury signaled her for help at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. Danvers rescued Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) from deep space but she missed most of Avengers: Endgame, arriving just in time to help the Avengers kill Thanos (Josh Brolin). After Stark’s funeral, Danvers returned to space again although she appeared in the end-credits scene of Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings.
In the MCU timeline, 23 years passed between Captain Marvel and Avengers: Infinity War, which means there are over two decades of Carol Danvers’ adventures unaccounted for. This is an ideal basis for a Captain Marvel Disney+ animated series to complement What If…?. After all, it’s not even known where Carol took the Skrulls after Captain Marvel ended and where their new homeworld is (although Nick Fury’s Secret Invasion Disney+ series may fill in that detail). Overall, the MCU has yet to account for Captain Marvel’s missing stories before she answered Fury’s beeper in Infinity War but a Captain Marvel show can finally chronicle Carol’s life in deep space. Further, Captain Marvel on Disney+ wouldn’t even be reliant on Brie Larson to voice her superhero since Alexandra Daniels has proven herself as an excellent Carol Danvers in What If…?
There are countless questions surrounding Captain Marvel’s adventures, such as: Where does she live when she’s in space? Did Carol make good on her threat to the Kree Supreme Intelligence (Annette Bening) at the end of Captain Marvel? What happened to Yon-Rogg (Jude Law)? A Captain Marvel animated show can flesh out Carol’s universe – which is literally the MCU’s universe – and also bring in the countless cosmic beings in the MCU like Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), Ego (Kurt Russell), and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) while introducing new MCU characters as well. What If…? has already shown there are few limits to Marvel’s high-quality animation and a Captain Marvel show could even depict a comics-accurate version of the Supreme Intelligence.
In Avengers: Endgame and Shang-Chi, Carol Danvers has a habit of suddenly vanishing to answer “emergencies.” A Captain Marvel animated series can finally show what those crises are and where Danvers zooms off to. It can also chart Carol’s evolution as an intergalactic superhero and how she learned and improved on how to use her powers over the course of the 23 years between her solo film and Endgame. Captain Marvel is one of the MCU’s highest-profile superheroes yet relatively little is known about Carol Danvers. As such, The Marvels will be a welcome comeback for Captain Marvel, and it should deepen the audiences’ understanding of her character. But not even The Marvels can tell Carol’s full story of her life in space, which is why a Captain Marvel Disney+ series is the best way to take Danvers’ superhero history higher, further, and faster.
