Alec Baldwin Sued for Defamation by Family of Marine Killed in Afghanistan

Alec Baldwin is now being sued and dragged into court by the family of a Marine killed in Afghanistan. The family claims that the actor falsely accused the marine of being a January 6th rioter and unleashed his loyal fans on them as retaliation.

Currently, Baldwin is being sued by relatives of late Marine Rylee McCollum, one of the 13 U.S. service members killed in last August’s bombing outside the Kabul airport during the troop withdrawal from Afghanistan. According to the lawsuit, McCollum’s family is saying that Baldwin found out about the marine’s death and sent his widow $5,000 via the marine’s sister. The gesture, which appeared nice, turned into something far worse and has continued to be a drain on the family, they say. According to documents, the McCollum family claims the 62-year-old actor went on a social media attack and rant, where he commented on a picture the marine’s sister posted of her at the Washington Monument on January 6th 2021, before the riot at the Capitol.

According to the new lawsuit, the family says that the picture has a comment left from Baldwin’s Instagram account which said, “Are you the same woman that I sent the $ to for your sister’s husband who was killed during the Afghanistan exit?” After that, the family claims that Baldwin then began exchanging direct messages with the marine’s sister, accusing her of being a “January 6th rioter” and telling her to “own it.”

The recent documents associated with the new lawsuit say that Baldwin even reposted a photo of the marine’s sister on his Instagram, which led to tons of his 2.4 million followers threatening and harassing the McCollum family online. The marine’s sister has said that she did not participate in the Capitol riot, adding she didn’t even go to the Capitol. She also has stated that she’s already been interviewed by the FBI and was cleared of any wrongdoing.

According to the suit, the family claims that Baldwin’s social media behavior was negligent and reckless. They say that he should have known that making allegations against them in front of his followers would cause the family harm. The marine’s sisters and widow are suing Baldwin for defamation, negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and more and seeking more than $25 million in damages. Currently, nobody from the Baldwin camp has commented on this current lawsuit.

This comes all during the investigation into the accidental shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust, a film in which not only Alec Baldwin was starirng in but also was a producer. The investigation is still underway as far as what happened, and currently, a lawsuit has also been filed against the actor.
