Marvel Studios is finally reintroducing characters from the pre-Disney+ Marvel television series in the films. Fans were delighted to see the return of Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil, in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Before Murdock crosses paths with Peter Parker, another character already transitions from the world of Marvel television into a Marvel film. Edwin Jarvis makes his first film appearance in Avengers: Endgame after being introduced to fans in ABC’s Agent Carter series.
With more characters from previous television series and even separate Marvel universes continuing to appear in the MCU, there is an opportunity for characters from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to return. The series concluded an impressive seven-season run in 2020, with some hailing the series as being some of Marvel’s finest television content. While the series may be over, there is more Marvel can do with the series’ rich cast of characters. These are a few of the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. who deserve to return in MCU movies.
5 Mockingbird (Bobbi Morse)
Agent Bobbi Morse appears in Season 2 and Season 3 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Alongside Melinda May, Bobbi Morse earns her spot on the list of most skilled S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives. Both Morse and her partner, Lance Hunter, leave the series when they are forced to resign from S.H.I.E.L.D. to keep the agency undercover. Hunter and Morse were set to appear in a spin-off called Marvel’s Most Wanted which did not materialize.
Although Morse operates under the codename of “Mockingbird” as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, the Hawkeye series connects Clint’s wife, Laura Barton, to agent number 19. It is Bobbi Morse, not Laura Barton, that is assigned the number 19 in the comics. In the comics, Laura is actually not even an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Elements of the comics’ incarnation of Bobbi Morse are being implemented into the MCU’s Laura Barton. Additionally, Laura Barton replaces Bobbi Morse as Hawkeye’s wife in Marvel Studios’ films.
MCU Laura Barton retires from service to raise a family, so it is possible that Morse takes the “Mockingbird” name after Barton in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Both Morse and Laura Barton can be Mockingbird if it is a mantle instead of the identity of a single character. Bringing a beloved character like Bobbi Morse back through the films can further develop Laura Barton as a former agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. It would also work as great fan-service for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans wanting to see Bobbi’s return.
4 Melinda May
Disney Legends Hall of Famer, Ming-Na Wen, appears in major roles across many Disney franchises. She is the voice of Mulan, plays Fennec Shand in The Mandalorian, The Bad Batch, and The Book of Boba Fett, and she even has a Marvel role as the “Calvary” in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.; Agent Melinda May.
An incredibly skilled pilot and fighter, Melinda May retires to become a teacher at the Coulson Academy at the end of the series. While May’s time in the field may have come to an end, the fans’ love for Ming-Na and her character continues. It would be very satisfying to see Melinda May train the next generation of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in a Marvel Studios film.
The bond between Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons is something so pure and so strong. They are two people who care very deeply for each other and would die for one another. Together, they are known as “FitzSimmons.” The two eventually marry and retire from S.H.I.E.L.D. so that they can raise a daughter. They retire for a reason, so it would be unlikely for either Fitz or Simmons to rejoin S.H.I.E.L.D. as active agents. However, the two are still among the brightest minds in the world. Their help may still be needed. The Marvel Cinematic Universe already loses a major scientific genius with the death of Tony Stark. It is likely that Shuri and Bruce Banner will be stepping up as the main characters of the MCU that are the science experts. Soon, they will also be joined by Reed Richards and Victor von Doom, and maybe one day in the MCU, Amadeus Cho.
Both Fitz and Simmons have key experience dealing with Inhumans, Life Model Decoys, simulated virtual realities, and time travel. There are few characters with the vast knowledge and many experiences that Fitz and Simmons have. Perhaps either Fitz or Simmons could take a break from their regular routine to help the superheroes with some science.
Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie is among the strongest and most courageous at S.H.I.E.L.D. Mack is a leader who does his absolute best, frequently getting his team out of difficult situations. He is a very intelligent man that also comes from a mechanical engineering background. If S.H.I.E.L.D. were to reappear in a film, Mack needs to be in it. Why? Because Mack is the director of S.H.I.E.L.D.!
S.H.I.E.L.D. carries a large presence in the earlier MCU, with Avengers such as Captain America and Black Widow working directly for them. Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe features the dissolution of S.H.I.E.L.D. after it is revealed that Hydra successfully infiltrated the espionage agency in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Since then, S.H.I.E.L.D. has been largely absent from the films. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. focuses on a small team of agents picking up the pieces. Mack plays a major role in helping S.H.I.E.L.D. rebuild, so he deserves a moment to shine on the big screen when S.H.I.E.L.D. reappears.
After the conclusion of the Infinity Saga with Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, the Avengers disband. The Avengers never get the chance to see Phil Coulson after his initial death. But as a new team of Avengers begins to form, the Avengers could cross paths with Mack and see him leading a new S.H.I.E.L.D.
1 Quake (Daisy Johnson)
Coulson may be one of the central characters, but the true lead of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D is Daisy Johnson. First introduced as a young hacker by the name of Skye, Daisy experiences a journey of tremendous self-growth throughout the show’s seven seasons. Daisy is intelligent, compassionate, brave, and is also a superhero under the name of “Quake.”
She is an Inhuman, unlocking the power to manipulate vibrations. As Marvel Studios introduces new Inhumans to the MCU such as Ms. Marvel, they can also bring back a Marvel fan-favorite in Daisy Johnson. At the end of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Daisy is on a deep space adventure with her half-sister, Kora, and her new romantic interest, an altered-timeline’s Daniel Sousa.
What exactly the trio are doing in space remains unclear. However, Marvel’s recent focus on the cosmos, alternate timelines, and the Multiverse presents storytelling opportunities for Daisy to appear in a future film.
