Rupert Grint Describes His Tricky Relationship With J.K. Rowling

Rupert Grint admits that while he doesn’t agree with everything Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling says, he still views her as an aunt of sorts.

Rupert Grint opens up about his relationship with Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, likening it to one someone might have with a relative. As the recent HBO Max special Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts proved, there is still a lot of affection for the Boy Who Lived. However, the Harry Potter franchise has been overshadowed in recent years by Rowling’s public anti-trans views. The author had courted controversy for some time, but things began to reach a fever pitch in 2020 when Rowling tweeted out comments suggesting trans women aren’t real women.

At the time, several Harry Potter stars spoke out against Rowling, including the central trio of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Grint. Since then, Rowling hasn’t done much to change her stance. Warner Bros. has continued with creating new projects set within the Wizarding World, but in some instances, the studio has diminished her involvement. For example, the trailer for this year’s Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore made Rowling’s name hard to see even though she co-wrote the script. She also didn’t appear in new footage for the Harry Potter reunion, though that reportedly had little to do with her controversies.

Grint opened up a bit about his relationship with Rowling in a recent piece with The Times called “What I’ve Learnt” (via EW). He summed it up in a way that many people can likely relate to, as he described Rowling as a sort of aunt. “I don’t necessarily agree with everything my auntie says, but she’s still my auntie,” Grint wrote. “It’s a tricky one.”

While it might be easy for outsiders to feel the cast of Harry Potter should simply cut themselves off from Rowling entirely, in reality it must be much harder. Rowling created the world that lifted Grint’s career, and he grew up knowing her. Therefore, the familial comparison makes sense. His co-stars likely feel the same; when Radcliffe spoke out in support of the trans community, he clarified that it wasn’t a sign of tension between him and Rowling. Evanna Lynch, who played Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter films, stood by the trans community in 2020 as well, but also defended Rowling and suggested her tweets didn’t encapsulate who she is.

Sadly, as long as Rowling continues to perpetuate stereotypes that harm trans people, this controversy won’t come to an end any time soon. Her most recent comments came just last month, right after the release of the Secrets of Dumbledore trailer. She also didn’t seem to express much remorse even as real life Quidditch leagues sought to change their name to avoid associating with her. Those who know Rowling might find themselves in difficult positions these days, as Grint suggested, and the same can likely be said of a good number of Harry Potter fans. One just has to hope Rowling will educate herself on these matters soon.
