Taika Waititi’s Blackbeard Revealed In Our Flag Means Death Trailer

The trailer for the upcoming HBO Max TV series, Our Flag Means Death, offers a preview of Taika Waititi’s take on the legendary Blackbeard.

HBO Max has released a new teaser trailer for the high sails pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death, featuring a brief glimpse at Taika Waititi’s take on the legendary character of Blackbeard. The new TV series follows the life of Stede Bonnet (played by Rhys Darby), a pampered 18th-century aristocrat who abandons his life of luxury to become a pirate. The show is written and created by David Jenkins, who previously created the science fiction comedy series People of Earth for TBS.

Also joining Waititi amongst the cast of Our Flag Means Death are Fred Armisen, Joel Fry, Rory Kinnear, Leslie Jones, and Kristian Nairn. Waititi is also directing two of the show’s six episodes, and is currently one of the most successful directors in the industry after directing the Academy Award-winning Jojo Rabbit and Marvel’s 2017 smash hit Thor: Ragnarok. Waititi also recently completed directorial duties on the upcoming Thor sequel, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Next Goal Wins, which is based on a true story.

HBO Max premiered the exciting new teaser trailer for the original series Our Flag Means Death, as audiences catch a glimpse at Waititi as Blackbeard for the very first time. Key scenes include a look at the flowing, illustrious beard of the infamous pirate, as he interacts with Darby’s Bonnet in an ominous exchange. Although no exact official release date has yet been announced for the show, it is expected to premiere during the first half of 2022. Flight of the Conchords star Darby leads the series’ cast alongside his frequent collaborator Waititi. The two have previously collaborated countless times on other projects such as What We Do in the Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and the aforementioned Next Goal Wins.

Our Flag Means Death is inspired by the real life story of Stede Bonnet, who was known as “The Gentlemen Pirate” due to his privileged and wealthy background. Bonnet did in fact cross paths with Edward Teach, otherwise known as Blackbeard, who is played by Waititi. The series will likely include aspects of the two historical pirates’ adventures and explore their unconventional connection with one another. Bonnet turned to a life of piracy in 1717, after buying a sailing-vessel and naming it Revenge, as he sailed with his crew along the US Eastern Seaboard.

Due to the involvement of Waititi on the series as actor, director and executive producer, the expectations are high for this likely hilarious series. His combination with Jenkins, who is a proven comedic writer and creator, seems to be the perfect recipe for pure laughter and fun. Our Flag Means Death will also provide HBO Max with an opportunity to potentially have its own successful comedic series that can rival the original comedy programming of other streamers like Netflix, Apple and Hulu, and its star-studded cast of comedy legends like Darby and Waititi is certainly a step in the right direction.
