The Story of Hip-Hop With Chuck D is Coming to PBS

Chuck D is bringing The Story of Hip-Hop to PBS. The Public Enemy frontman will now be part of a four-part docuseries titled The Story of Hip-Hop with Chuck D, Deadline reports. The series comes from BBC Studios and will be developed by Chuck D and his manager Lorrie Boula.

The program will look at the story of hip-hop and how the art form has changed and developed over the last 40 years. It will feature accounts from some of rap’s major players, including Run DMC, LL Cool J, and Queen Latifah, as well as some of hip-hop’s current top-selling artists.

The hip-hop community has, from the start, been doing what the rest of media is only now catching up to,” Chuck D said, according to Deadline. “Long before any conglomerate realized it was time to wake up, hip-hop had been speaking out and telling truths. Working with PBS and BBC is an opportunity to deliver these messages through new ways, reach more people and help explain hip-hop’s place in history and hopefully inspire us all to take it further.”

“PBS is excited to join with Chuck D, Lorrie Boula and BBC Studios to bring this illuminating project to audiences across our platforms,” added Bill Gardner, Vice President of Multiplatform Programming and Head of Development for PBS. “Hip-hop is one of the most influential artistic genres and cultural movements of our time, and we’re thrilled to tell a deep and unflinching story with one of its originators and most powerful voices.”

Carlton Douglas Ridenhour, known professionally as Chuck D, is the leader of the rap group Public Enemy, which he co-founded in 1985 with Flavor Flav. Chuck D helped create politically and socially conscious hip-hop music in the mid-1980s. The Source ranked him at No. 12 on their Top 50 Hip-Hop Lyricists of All Time list. Since then, Chuck D has been influential in his political views and music. He joined and helped form the Prophets of Rage. They were a rap-rock supergroup. In 2016, the group consisted of three members of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave (bassist and backing vocalist Tim Commerford, guitarist Tom Morello, and drummer Brad Wilk), two members of Public Enemy (DJ Lord and rapper Chuck D), and rapper B-Real of Cypress Hill. Their music addressed the issues of the world, like poverty, drugs, the government and more.

PBS has switched up its programs as of late to reach a broader market and keep people informed with the world around them. The Story of Hip-Hop with Chuck D is part of that new programming, and hopefully, we will see more programs like this in the future. We do not have a release date for the new series but will continue to follow this as it develops, and once we have more details, we will keep you updated. And, of course, continue to follow MovieWeb for all the latest trailers and news.
