Look who’s back. After retiring from the part, Tyler Perry returns to the titular role in the upcoming sequel A Madea Homecoming. It is set to debut exclusively on Netflix in February, and ahead of the premiere, the streamer has dropped a few images to give us our first peek at Madea’s return. Tyler Perry wrote and directed A Madea Homecoming. Will Areu and Mark Swinton produced with Perry executive producing.
The synopsis for the movie reads: “Madea’s back — hallelujer! Tyler Perry returns with everyone’s favorite character in Tyler Perry’s A Madea Homecoming, the newest film in the Madea franchise set to debut on Netflix. Writer-director-producer Perry stars in the film that centers around Madea’s great-grandson’s college graduation, though the celebratory moment hits a halt as hidden secrets and family drama threaten to destroy the happy homecoming. The film features all-stars of the Madea franchise, including Tamela Mann (Cora), David Mann (Mr. Brown), Cassi Davis Patton (Aunt Bam) as well as a guest appearance from iconic Irish actor Brendan O’Carroll, who matches Madea’s comedic prowess as Agnes Brown.”
This is the 12th installment of the Madea movie series, which began with Diary of a Mad Black Woman in 2005. Created and portrayed by Perry, Madea is based on the filmmaker’s mother and aunt and, in some ways, serves to pay homage to them. Initially, Perry planned to say farewell to the character after playing the role in 2019’s A Madea Family Funeral, though we know now he obviously changed his mind.
Tyler Perry Kept the Door Open for Madea’s Return
“I don’t want to be her age playing her, so it was time to shut it down and move on,” Perry said in 2019, thinking he was finished with the part with A Madea Family Funeral. “I’ve got some other things I want to do, and in this next 50, I’m going to do something different.”
However, Perry also made sure to keep the door open for a potential return, even if he didn’t realize it’d be in just a few years. Given the title of the last film, it would have made sense for Madea to have been killed off, but Perry wanted to keep the character alive as the fans still love Madea.
“It’s always going to be open-ended because what you don’t want to do is murder a family member. And a lot of people feel like she’s a family member,” he said.
Along with the release of A Madea Family Funeral, Perry also took the character on the road for “Madea’s Farewell Tour,” which featured Perry performing to sold-out crowds. As of now, Perry hasn’t indicated whether he considers A Madea Homecoming to serve as a possible stopping point for the franchise, or if he’s now considering bringing Madea back for another sequel already. In any case, it won’t be long now before we get to see the character’s next outing.
Tyler Perry’s A Madea Homecoming will start streaming on Netflix on Feb. 25, 2022.
After previously retiring the character, Tyler Perry will once again suit up as Madea in a new comedy movie for Netflix.
