Why Baldur’s Gate 3 Still Isn’t Out When The Original Is 23 Years Old

Fans of Dungeon’s & Dragons and the original Baldur’s Gate games are excited for Baldur’s Gate 3, but why has it taken so long for a third game?

Gamers who love Dungeons & Dragons are no doubt excited for Baldur’s Gate 3, but why has there been 23 years since the last game? Baldur’s Gate 3 is being developed by Larian Studios, developers of Divinity: Original Sin and 2. Currently, the game is in early access and available to purchase on Steam and GOG. Baldur’s Gate 3 has been in early access for over a year now, but the studio has said it is going to finally have a full release date in 2022.

The first Baldur’s Gate title was released in 1998 and was developed by BioWare. The game was very technically advanced for its time, using a pre-rendered isometric worldview, and used the Advanced Dungeons&Dragons ruleset for its gameplay. An expansion, Tales of the Sword Coast came in 1999, and the sequel, Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn was launched in 2000. Baldur’s Gate 3 will make a lot of changes from 2 and 1 because of the current D&D ruleset it uses and the advances in the timeline it will make.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is going to be big, so it is unsurprising that the early access development is taking a long time, but there are more reasons why the series has taken so long to get a third main entry. A lot of the reasons for the gap between 2 and 3 come down to issues with the license to use the D&D ruleset and the Baldur’s Gate title. Additionally, Wizard’s Of The Coast, who owns and publishes D&D, had to be convinced by Larian that it was the right team to bring back Baldur’s Gate. The demand for another Baldur’s Gate game has been there since the second game received its expansion in 2001 and the success of the enhanced editions confirmed that. Now, fans are closer than ever to being able to continue their adventures.

Why Has Baldur’s Gate 3 Taken So Long

Baldur’s Gate 3 has taken a long time to get started and is taking a long time to fully release, but there are good reasons for that. Originally, Baldur’s Gate 3: The Black Hound was going to be made by Black Isle Studios in 2002 and published again by Interplay Entertainment, but the publisher faced a financial crisis and shut down Black Isle, canceling the game. Interplay lost the D&D license to Atari in 2008, which then made Neverwinter 1 and 2. Since then, the Baldur’s Gate license remained with Wizards of the Coast.

Larian Studios approached WotC inquiring about Baldur’s Gate after making Divinity: Original Sin in 2014, but WotC felt Larian was not experienced enough to take control of the IP. After the huge success of Divinity: Original Sin 2 in 2017, WotC contacted Larian asking if it was still interested in Baldur’s Gate 3, which they were, and a deal was struck to create the new game. Larian started the creation of Baldur’s Gate 3 with a small team that has grown over time. Because the game is going to be so large and has such great expectations to fill, it has needed a long time to fully develop.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is closer to a release date than ever, but fans will still have to wait a bit before they can experience the full game. Larian has confirmed the game will leave early access this year, but there are lots of things Baldur’s Gate 3 needs to finish before it releases. In the meantime, fans should play Divinity: Orignal Sin 2 to get familiar with the Larian Studios gameplay mechanics, and also play or read up on the events of Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2. There’s a lot of content to get through in those games, which should be more than enough to pass the time before Baldur’s Gate 3 finally releases.
