In a new preview for Marvel Comics’ X Lives of Wolverine, Logan himself confirms how strange his relationship with Charles Xavier truly is.
Warning: spoilers ahead for X Lives of Wolverine #1!
In a new preview for Marvel Comics’ new X Lives of Wolverine #1, Wolverine freely admits how strange his relationship with Charles Xavier truly is. The former professor of the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters, Charles is now a leading member of the Quiet Council, the ruling government of the mutant island nation of Krakoa. For years, Logan has been a key member of the X-Men, and yet he more than an average lifetime before he ever joined Xavier’s school and team of heroes thanks to his healing factor. As a result, there’s something truly strange about Logan seeing Xavier as a surrogate father given his actual age in the Marvel Universe.
Born in the 1800s, Logan was raised as James Howlett, living longer than the average man due to his mutant ability to rapidly heal, along with his bone claws which would eventually be covered by adamantium by the Weapon X program. Now, X Lives of Wolverine #1 from Benjamin Percy and Joshua Cassara will begin a new journey where Wolverine looks back, being sent back along his own timeline with help from Charles Xavier, Jean Grey, and Cerebro. However, the series will alternate each week with the connected X Deaths of Wolverine, telling what will be “the greatest Wolverine story ever told” according to Percy.
As such, it makes sense that Wolverine would be preoccupied with the concept of time just before he’s about to venture back into his admittedly troubled past in this new preview. Furthermore, he confirms that surprisingly, Xavier and Jean have been the closest things he has to family throughout his unnaturally long life. Not only that, but Logan also admits it’s strange that he views Xavier as a father figure considering he’s probably twice the professor’s age. Enjoy the preview pages and synopsis for the upcoming issue:
X LIVES OF WOLVERINE WEEK 1 – Logan. James Howlett. Weapon X. The mutant best known as WOLVERINE has lived many lives under many identities and in many places, but never before has the fate of the future been so entwined with the past! Fan-favorite eras of Wolverine’s saga are explored anew, along with never-before-seen episodes as Logan must travel to various points in time to prevent the death of a key figure in mutant history. But these LIVES are only one side of the story… Be here for the start of the time-shredding saga across all of Wolverine’s history and future yet to come!
While Wolverine may see Xavier as a surrogate father, that doesn’t inherently mean he’s a good one. Ever since mutants created their own independent nation on the island of Krakoa, Charles has had plenty of secrets he’s withheld from those he used to trust. Furthermore, X-Men: Original Sin revealed that Xavier had a role in Wolverine’s memory loss, having secretly tampered with Logan’s mind to erase the psychological conditioning within Logan thanks to Weapon X. Regardless, it seems as though Logan is still loyal enough to go back through his own dark timeline to save this “key figure in mutant history,” as his new story ushers in the Second Age of Krakoa.
X Lives of Wolverine (as well as the connected X Deaths of Wolverine) will certainly be a dynamic new series, seemingly putting Wolverine in a very similar position as his film counterpart in X-Men: Days of Future Past. While the event teases a death for every life as new insights will be revealed about Logan’s past, here’s hoping Wolverine will be able to survive the coming remix of the many lives he’s lived in the Marvel Universe. Perhaps he’ll be attempting to save Charles Xavier himself, but fans will just have to wait and see when the full X Lives of Wolverine #1 releases on January 19.
