After Luca, Pixar has Turning Red, Lightyear, and a TBC animated film on the release slate. Here are the details on all the upcoming Pixar movies.
The sea monster coming-of-age movie Luca brought massive amounts of viewers to Disney+, so what are other upcoming Pixar movies, and their release dates? Pixar Animation Studios has released 24 feature films so far, the first being Toy Story in 1995 and the latest being Luca in 2021. Since 2006, Pixar released one feature film per year, with 2020 premiering two: Onward and Soul. While Pixar’s movie output is certainly high, the studio is renowned for its quality films that explore fascinating themes with heart and don’t lack imagination or innovation.
While 2020 presented many challenges to the filmmaking industry, Pixar still managed to complete films in changed circumstances. While Luca took years to make, much of the animation and voice recording was completed remotely. Release dates changed – as did release methods, with Luca and Soul releasing exclusively on Disney+. Pixar movies after Luca are still set to have an exclusive Disney+ release, but some are scheduled to hit theaters in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Pixar has five movies releasing after Luca, with release dates on Disney’s schedule, beginning with Turning Red and Lightyear, both scheduled for a 2022 release date. While Turning Red is releasing exclusively on Disney+, Lightyear is set for a theatrical release as well. There is also three untitled Pixar movie on Disney’s release schedule. One will be out in 2023 and two more in 2024. Here are all the Pixar movies releasing after Luca.
Turning Red: March 11, 2022
The first Pixar movie debuting after Luca is Turning Red. The movie tells the coming-of-age story of Mei Lee, a dorky girl of 13 years who is torn between obedience and adventure. While comparable to the Pixar movie Inside Out, Turning Red takes a more magical approach to teenage life. While Mei goes through all the changes of adolescence including relationships, interests, as well as her body, if she gets too excited or stressed she suddenly transforms into a giant red panda – and Mei Lee is frequently excited. Academy Award-winner Domee Shi (who directed the Pixar short Bao) is writing the movie with Julia Cho and directing, to be produced by Lindsey Collins (WALL-E, Finding Dory). Domee Shi will be the first woman to solely direct a Pixar feature film. The official release date announced by Pixar is Friday, March 11th, 2022. Turning Red, like Soul and Luca, will be released exclusively on Disney+.
Lightyear: Summer 2022
Another Pixar movie releasing after Luca is the sci-fi action-adventure animated movie Lightyear. The film will tell the origin story of Toy Story‘s character Buzz Lightyear – an astronaut upon whom the toy is based. Chris Evans voices the animated human version of Buzz, revealing the Space Ranger’s roots as a young test pilot. Taika Waititi is also cast in an undisclosed role. The movie will be directed by Angus MacLane (who co-directed Finding Dory) and produced by Galyn Susman (Toy Story 4). It will be Pixar’s return to the big screen, as Lightyear is scheduled for a theatrical release. Lightyear has been in the works for some time now since the film was pitched back in 2016 after the release of Finding Dory. Pixar’s release date for the film is Summer 2022, which matches the Walt Disney Studios Pixar release slate date of June 17, 2022.
Untitled Pixar Movie: Summer 2023
Pixar has three more movies releasing after Luca on the Walt Disney Studios release slate, though there’s no official announcement yet about what these films could be. The first of Pixar’s untitled projects is set to release on June 16, 2023. Fans should be able to expect some kind of news on this installment soon. This movie will mark the end of the studio’s spotty release schedule, as the animation team has stated a return to their two-movies-a-year policy starting in 2024. There’s no telling what fans can expect from this TBC title, as Pixar tends to release their original films during the summertime. So, it most likely won’t be a prequel.
Untitled Pixar Movie: Spring 2024
Pixar is wasting no time after releasing Luca with these three untitled projects on the way. Per their usual tactics, the animation studio is keeping all story and cast under wraps in order to build anticipation. There’s no doubt that this TBC movie will be full of familiar warm themes and an all-star cast. Soul’s release was the first springtime movie release for the studio, as Pixar generally chooses to put their movies out during the holiday season or the summer. Since the studio has decided to temporarily move away from feature film sequels after Toy Story 4 viewers can surmise that the movies will be either an origin story like Lightyear or an entirely new idea like Turning Red. This title is set to hit the screen on March 1, 2024.
Untitled Pixar Movie: Summer 2024
The final Pixar movie releasing after Luca, thus far, is set to come out on June 14, 2024. There’s no word as of yet whether this movie will be sent straight to Disney+ or hit theaters. However, with Lightyear slated for a theatrical run chances are this untitled project will be as well. Pixar has released some of their greatest hits in the summer, such as Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, Brave, and Up. Between Lightyear and other Pixar and Disney+ releases, expectations for this untitled feature should be set pretty high.
All of these films are in addition to the three Pixar Animation Studios series releasing on Disney+. Dug Days is based on Doug, the dog character from Up. The miniseries follows Doug, after the events of Up living with Carl in their new suburban home. The first episode came out September 1, 2021. Another show, Cars on the Road is releasing Fall of 2022. It’s based on the 2006 film of the same name and takes viewers back to the adventures of Lightning McQueen and Tater while they take a cross-country road trip. The final Pixar series releasing after Luca is called Win or Lose. Not much is known about the television show, other than that it will follow a middle-school softball team and will be released via Disney+ in the fall of 2023.
Fans of Pixar Animation Studios and upcoming Disney movies in general have a lot to look forward to when it comes to their famously successful collaborative projects. It seems like Pixar will forever be chock full of heartwarming ideas and family-friendly coming-of-age stories. Devotees of the studio’s illustrious film credis can now also look forward to animators breaking into the television series game, as the animation company has just as many set feature films as they do television series. With Luca now streaming on Disney+, animation fans can look forward to five upcoming Pixar movies releasing after Luca in development and releasing over the next few years.
