Jonah Hill Wants to Do Superbad 2 When the Cast Is in Their 80s

If you’re looking forward to a sequel to Superbad, we have some good news and some bad news. Jonah Hill, who starred as one of the main characters in the first film, recently told W Magazine that he does want to do a follow-up movie. The downside for fans is that it’s going to be a very long while before that will actually happen, as Hill’s one condition on doing the film is that he wants to wait until the cast are much older, perhaps in their 80s.

“I haven’t pitched this to anybody,” Hill said of the concept. “What I want to do is when we’re like 80, do a Superbad 2. Like, ‘old-folks-home Superbad.’ Our spouses die, and we’re single again. That’s what I want Superbad 2 to be, and that’s the only way I would ever make it.”

It doesn’t sound like there’s much wiggle room in there for Hill to change his mind, apparently pretty set on the elderly Superbad idea. Hill’s co-star Seth Rogen also told LadBible in 2020 that it was probably the one movie he’s worked on that he wouldn’t want to revisit. The actor expressed his opinion that Superbad is pretty perfect as it is and he doesn’t seem to want to meddle with it by making a sequel or a reboot.

“Honestly, I don’t think it requires improvement or anything to be built upon it,” Rogen explained. “I’m unbelievably proud of it. It really holds up — people still watch it, high school kids come up to me telling me that they watched it for the first time and how they loved it. It’s worked its way into being viewed as one of the better high school movies that are out there. I’m so terrified of subtracting from it in any way with a bad sequel or spinoff that I’d never do it. I have so few actual good accomplishments that I’m horrified to f*ck with the ones I have.”

Directed by Greg Mottola, Superbad was released in 2007. The coming-of-age comedy follows two teens planning to lose their virginity before graduation but that goal is not as easy as they are hoping for. Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who plays McLovin in the first movie, has also acknowledged how the cast doesn’t really want to revisit the film. He believes that if a reboot were to happen, the best thing to do would be to put a spin on it by having a female-led cast.

“I’ve heard from some of the people who made the first one, and I don’t think they want to touch it. I think they kind of like where it’s sitting,” the actor noted. “And, sometimes if you make a sequel to things, it can kind of damper the first one. I think they just want to let it be… If there was a way to do it, [a female version] would be the way, for sure.”

In any case, we probably shouldn’t plan on seeing a sequel to Superbad entering development in the near future.
